2026 M. C. Bauman, Ltd. Round Tuit Wooden Nickel

Harkening back to a bygone era of a wooden Native American figure holding a bunch of cigars at the local tobacconist, the Wooden Nickel was a part of our American history. As early as the 1880s it appeared as a token, though gained wide popularity in the 1930s during the Great Depression when silver coinage was scarce. Exchanged as currency, even banks of that era issued them with an expiration date. Throughout the rest of the 20th Century the Wooden Nickel became a novelty and a caution not to accept one.

The origins of the iconic Round Tuit are unknown, though the image and concept placing it on a Wooden Nickel was a popular novelty in the mid 20th Century. While these pieces are no longer produced in the quantities that they were, they are still manufactured here in the US by a company that specializes in them, now well into the 21st Century.

M. C. Bauman, Ltd continues this tradition. The Round Tuit Wooden Nickel has been adapted for the tobacco pipe aficionado, preserving the history, humor and vintage style of this tradition. Each is 2 inches in diameter, made from solid wood, laser engraved with custom graphics, hand sanded, polished and finished. They are date stamped with the year of craft and the design will be retired at the end of each calendar year.

Each of these collectible keepsake pieces is individally made and finished. They are not mass produced and each side is invidually laser engraved, one at time. No two are exaxtly alike and may exhibit warping or imperfections as any Wooden Nickel that was ever made. The total number of each year’s nickels produced will be published at the end of each year.
